The third grade year is a year of transition and changes in rules, homework, grading procedures, as well as the general operations of the classroom. I am sincerely looking forward to a fun–filled and educational year!

    SNACK

At the third grade level we do not have a scheduled snack. We do have a milk break almost every day, and class snacks are always welcomed. Students may bring in an individual snack each day to have during our milk break. Students will not be allowed to share snacks and healthy choices are encouraged.

    RULES

To ensure a positive learning environment for all children, rules and consequences have been established.

    The student will:

O - Only talk in a polite manner and work quietly

S - Stay on task during class time

C - Complete work on time and with our best effort

A - Always follow directions and procedures

R - Respect everyone and everything

    CONSEQUENCES

The consequences, which are consistent and progressive:

    1. Oral warning
    2. Student/teacher discussion
    3. Loss of privileges (i.e. recess, line placement, etc.)
    4. Parent notification

    HOMEWORK

Your child will have homework this year. At the beginning of the year, I expect each child to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Spelling lists will be sent home on Mondays with a written spelling test on Fridays.

There will be other assignments to complete as homework; students use of class time will greatly affect the amount of homework. Students who do not have homework completed may need to miss recess to finish in a timely manner. Students will also be given tests at the end of chapters of core classes.

There may be times that your child will find an assignment difficult and will not score as high as we both would want them to. On these assignments I will add a note or stamp of ‘fix’ or ‘correct and return’ to inform them when an assignment needs to be corrected. This will give your child the opportunity to improve their knowledge of the topic presented and raise the grade for that assignment up to 80 percent. This can only be done on assignments that have been noted to do so. If you ever have a question, please let me know.

    GRADES

Letter grades will be implemented on most of their work and on students’ report cards. The following grading scale is established for third through sixth grade:

    A             100-93

    B            92-85

    C            84-74

    D            73-65

    F            64 and below

The Infinite Campus website will be available for you to monitor your child’s progress. Quarter/semester report card grades will be based on each child’s daily work, test scores, class participation, and effort. Missing work will negatively impact students’ grades, and will be entered as zeros in the grade book, until work is completed.

Our school has a wealth of highly educated staff members who will be working together to provide the best education possible for your child. Throughout the school year your child may be working with Mrs. Spencer, Ms. Zieher, Ms. Lehnert, Mrs. Spatz, Mrs. Aumann, Mr. Voss, Mrs. Hansen, or Mrs. Konkol.

If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to call or email me at any time.  I welcome all concerns, ideas, and feedback that affect your child or our classroom.

I know that third grade is going to be a great year!  There are so many fun things to do and learn in third grade, and I can't wait to get started!

    Sincerely,
