An automated external defibrillator (AED) will be used to treat victims who experience sudden cardiac arrest while on the school premises and for school events and activities.Policy and Procedure
1. An AED (Lifepak 500) is maintained at the Auburndale Jr/Sr High School. It is located in a properly labeled wall-mounted cabinet with an alarm system in the new gym’s lobby. This unit must not be moved to a different location except by the district’s certified athletic trainer, health care coordinator, or other appointed trained individual with the permission of the high school principal to provide coverage for an on site or school campus event or events. Notation of the location of the moved unit will be clearly listed on the cabinet.
2. An AED (ZOLL AEDPLUS) is maintained at the Auburndale Elementary School. It is located on the wall outside the medical office by the lavatories at the northeast corner of the cafeteria area. The AED is locked in a case with a glass front that may be broken to gain emergency access. If the glass is broken a bright blinking light will be activated on top of the case.
3. The AED’s may be used in emergency situations warranting its use only by individuals who are specifically trained in CPR and in the use of the device.
4. Training will be provided through MSTC’s American Heart Association’s program. Participants upon completion will be certified for two years.
5. Maintenance and testing of the units will be done by the health care coordinator on a monthly basis. This will include the following and documentation will be posted in the cabinet.
a. AED battery life
b. AED operation and status
c. Emergency kit supplies
6. Should an AED unit require repairs, these repairs will be completed within 24 hours on site. A replacement unit will be provided should the District’s AED be required to be transported to another location for repairs.
7. The type of AED and location on premises will be confirmed annually in writing to the following:
a. Auburndale First Responders
b. Marshfield Fire and Rescue
8. The advisor for the AED program will be the District’s official medical advisor at the Marshfield Clinic. The written authorization/prescription will be on file in the district office.
9. The existence of the AED in the schools shall be noted at the entrance of each building.
Use of the AED
1. If the victim is unresponsive, call “9-1-1” and get the AED
2. Assess the victim: airway, breathing and circulation
3. Initiate CPR if required
4. Prepare to use the AED
a. Turn the power on
b. Apply electrodes to bare chest (according to diagram on back of electrodes)
c. Stop CPR while machine analyzes heart rhythm
d. Follow the machine prompts for further action. If a shock is indicated, be sure all rescuers are “clear” before shock is administered
5. Upon arrival, the EMS will take charge of the victim. The school authorized person will provide the EMS with victim information: e.g., name, age, known medical problems, time of incident, current condition and number of shocks administered.
6. After use of the AED, the unit will be checked and put back to a readiness state.
