School District of Auburndale

377.1 - TOURNAMENT ATTENDANCE

Coach Attendance

1. Coaches/advisors employed as faculty whose participant(s) are eligible for WIAA State Tournament competition are required to supervise their participants in Wisconsin WIAA Tournaments. These coaches will be given professional leave time to perform these duties. In sports with four or less participants, the head coach and one additional selected coach will be allowed to use professional leave time.

2. Coaches whose participants do not qualify for WIAA State Tournament competition may attend a Wisconsin State WIAA Tournament in a sport they coach, but all costs are the responsibility of the individual coach. The school will not be responsible for any costs.

3. Coaches with qualified participants shall use professional leave.

4. Subject to administrative approval, the contracted head varsity WIAA member coach of a team without participants and one additional assistant coach selected by the head varsity coach may be allowed to use professional time to attend state tournament competition in his or her specific contracted sport, but must cover all their own personal expenses.

5. Assistant coaches without participants and not selected by the head varsity coach for attendance must use personal time should they wish to attend tournament competition. These coaches are also personally responsible for all expenses.

6. All coaches attendance at tournament competition is subject to administrative review.

Student Attendance

1. Non-competing students in the Senior High School (7-12) who regularly participate in a given varsity sport but failed to qualify for State competitions or a regularly participating cheerleader for that varsity sport will be allowed an excused absence from school while in attendance at a State WIAA Tournament in that sport when an Auburndale High School team or participant is officially competing. Such students must be squad or team members at the end of that sports season.

2. The school accepts no responsibility for the cost, safety or activities of students attending the WIAA Tournament, unless they are a participant in the tournament.

3. The arranging of transportation, housing, meals, and tickets of non-participating students is left strictly to the students' parents.

4. The school does not sanction the attendance of non-participating athletes to the WIAA State Tournaments and will accept no responsibility for their safety or conduct.

5. Faculty members will not be school chaperones for non-participating athletes unless approved fan buses are provided.

6. In all student attendance situations, the school administration has the ultimate decision.

7. Cheerleading, band, pep band, and any other organized school group's attendance at tournaments:

A. Bi-State Wrestling Tournament in LaCrosse: This is not a State WIAA Tournament, therefore no provision should be made to house the wrestling cheerleaders. If admission is charged and the cheerleaders for wrestling wish to attend, only tickets and travel expenses will be paid for by the school district. No overnight housing will be paid for, nor may the Board be approached for additional funding.

B. In the event of a qualifying team or a group of two or more wrestlers qualifying for the State WIAA Wrestling Tournament in Madison: Because of the format established by the WIAA, wrestling cheerleaders that would attend will be housed for one night’s stay in Madison. Tickets, housing for Friday night and the transportation cost to the tournament will be paid for by the school district. Wrestling takes place on Friday and Saturday and because of the late evening on Friday night, it is feasible to house the cheerleaders for that night and return home on Saturday night.

The number of cheerleaders attending shall not exceed the number of qualifying wrestlers. The exception would be in the event that only one wrestler qualifies, which would allow two cheerleaders to attend. Senior cheerleaders will be given priority for attending and there must be at least two cheerleaders attending. Should the wrestlers qualify as a team, all cheerleaders may attend. The supervisor will make the final decision as to which cheerleaders attend.

C. In the event of a qualifying team to the State WIAA Basketball Tournaments in Madison: Because of the format established by the WIAA, basketball cheerleaders attending the state tournament would have all tickets and transportation costs paid for by the school district. No allowance for housing is needed because games are played on Thursday and Saturday with Friday as a day of no participation.

D. In the event of a qualifying team to the State WIAA Football Tournament: Transportation and ticket costs will be paid for by the district for football cheerleaders attending the state tournament.

E. No provisions or monetary expenses will be paid by the school district for any athletic or cheerleading camps that are not a School Board approved co-curricular activity or any expense beyond the camps. All expenses must be paid by the individual.

F. The Advisor/Coach or an approved chaperone for the cheerleaders, band, pep band, or any other organized school group will be required to attend and supervise the group while attending any tournament.

G. High school band, pep band and any other organized school group's attendance at tournaments will be approved by the school administration. If the band/pep band and/or other organized group is requested to perform, the school district shall provide transportation, admittance, and a set amount for meals. If the band, pep band, and/or other organized school group requests to attend and this request is granted, transportation will be provided with students being responsible for any meals and following WIAA admittance guidelines.

H. All plans and decisions are subject to administrative review.
