353.1 - SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS
The School District of Auburndale recognizes that volunteers can make useful contributions to the School District of Auburndale. The Board of Education endorses and supports the concept of a volunteer workers in the schools, subject to the rules and limitations imposed.School volunteers are classified into three categories. These three groups are regular, occasional, and educational qualified. Regular volunteers are individuals that are working in the schools on a regular basis performing supervisory or clerical work. Occasional volunteers are individuals with usually a family relationship to students in the school and they may periodically assist the school with an event such as a field trip, student performance program, or some other short term activity. A educational qualified volunteer is an individual that has donated their time to provide their expertise in a given area to contribute to the students’ curriculum. Each of the three types of volunteers have a different exposure to students and follow different guidelines in their presence in the schools.
Regular Volunteer
1. Offers to serve as a regular school volunteer should be made through the building principal’s office. All regular volunteers are to be registered before beginning work.
2. The building principal shall define and assign responsibilities and tasks to be performed by regular volunteers in the respective schools. Volunteers should perform only those tasks assigned by the principal or designee.
3. Regular volunteers are subject to an appropriate background check should there be questions or concerns as to the individuals fitness to associate with children. A screening will be conducted for sexual predictors or any other activity that would eliminate the individual from working with children. The Wisconsin Consolidated Court Automation Programs (CCAP) (http://ccap.courts.state.wi.us/InternetCourtAccess/) Wisconsin Circuit Court Access will be checked.
4. Appropriate training or orientation activities shall be planned for regular volunteers so that they may become skilled in performing their assigned tasks. Any special job-related guidelines should be stressed in the orientation activities.
5. Regular school volunteers shall be expected to abide by all school rules and regulations when performing their assigned responsibilities.
6. Regular volunteers will be restricted from access to confidential information in student and employee files.
7. Regular volunteers will be responsible for maintaining confidentiality regarding information seen or heard while working as a volunteer.
8. Approved regular volunteers will be considered as being covered by the district’s liability insurance protection.
9. Regular volunteer assignments may be discontinued at the principal’s, superintendent’s or School Board’s discretion.
10. At periodic intervals, the principal and teachers will evaluate the effectiveness of the regular volunteers in this program.
11. Appropriate recognition for the regular volunteers will be performed and will be coordinated by the building principals.
Occasional Volunteer
1. Offers to serve occasionally as a school volunteer should be made through the building principal’s office or at the request of the teaching staff.
2. All occasional volunteers are subject to an appropriate background check should there be questions or concerns as to the individuals fitness to associate with children.
3. Assignment of occasional volunteers shall be made by the school principal or designee based on the volunteer’s expertise.
5. Occasional volunteers shall be under the direction of the building principal or designee. When volunteers work directly with children, their activities will be under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher or other designated employee.
7. Occasional school volunteers shall be expected to abide by all school rules and regulations when performing their assigned responsibilities.
