Students in grades 4K-3 will be picked up where their driveway meets the state, county or township road.
4K and Kindergarten students will not be allowed off the bus unless the parent/guardian or a responsible person is viewed as present by the driver. “Present” is defined as being within twenty (20) feet of a road that a student must cross or within an effective visual distance when the student does not have to cross a road. The district defines a responsible person as someone who is at least 12 years of age and has the maturity and ability to reasonably guarantee the safe drop off of a kindergarten or younger student.
If a parent/guardian or other responsible person is not present, the 4K or Kindergarten student will be transported back to the Elementary School Daycare Program. The Bus Service will attempt to contact the parent/guardian before transporting the student back to the daycare program. The parent/guardian will be charged for the use of the daycare program.
Students in grades 4-12 may be required to walk a maximum of .25 mile if necessary to accommodate the efficient routing of buses. An exception to this rule is when the .25 mile distance will create a potential medical or physical hazard to the student(s). Kieffer Bus Service and the Superintendent will jointly make this determination and notified the parent/guardian accordingly. A parent/guardian may appeal the decision to the Board.
Buses will refrain from traveling on roads that dead-end and require the bus to turn around in order to exit. Buses will travel on dead-end roads to pick up students who are in grades 4K-3. Students in grades 4-12 who live on a dead-end road and whose private driveway is more than .25 miles from a continuous road will be provided with bus service. The distance will be measured from the closest edge of the roadway that is not a dead-end road to the start of the student’s driveway. Students in grades 4-12 who live on a dead-end road and whose private driveway is .25 miles or less from a continuous road will be required to board the bus where the dead-end road meets the continuous road unless the bus is required to travel past their residence to pick up other students.
The dead-end road will need to be wide enough for safe travel, be kept clear of mud, deep ruts, and plowed in winter months. There must also be an area/driveway large enough for the bus to be able to safely turn around. Buses will not travel on private driveways with the exception that the end of a private drive may be used to turn a bus around. Failure to provide these conditions will allow the Bus Service to modify home pickup after consultation with the Superintendent.
